The List ~ The Other List
in a perfect world i might link to counts of those slain since the dawn of time, willingly or no, in the name of god and, ideologically- or ecomonically-speaking, country... save that in a perfect world, i would be spared such a need.

Submarining in the Desert...

so, yesterday T.H.E.Y. dropped the bomb on me...
Pearl Harbor Day will never by the same.

i failed to realize we had submarines in Iraq; how one submerges in sand is beyond me, but i'm sure i'll receive all the requisite training. i'm a little worried about gumming up the heat exchangers, actually... and i can only imagine that blowing sanitaries on the surface will be a much more unpleasant evolution than usual.

i suppose the hardest part will be finding my warfare qualification pin stitched in Desert Camouflage! on the bright side, i won't have to wear the Navy's new blue camouflage utilities (because when you fall overboard, you want to blend in with the ocean, right? brilliant.).

in addition to relating the gritty details of my USNA instructor tour at the English Department's sandy satellite Middle East campus, i will attempt to actually cover the HE112 course i had planned on teaching this spring. i may also cover some HE217 from time to time, when the medievalist in me craves attention. watch for the syllabi to be posted in early January; be sure to do the reading!

How many submariners does it take to stabilize a ground war? At least two. Will this be a hot turn-over? I had it, you got it.

I don't think you'll have any trouble finding beige dolphins...

Not to add to your troubles, but one of my guys (an STS2) who just got back from seven months pulling courier duty between Kuwait City and Baghdad had a bit of advice for you: make sure you keep your sidearm with you at all times, even when you're going to the shower -- stick it in your shaving kit or something. Apparently the camp he was living on was having some trouble with male-on-male rapes.

Brandon! Found your blog from Dr. Wright... wanted to wish you all the best. And let you know that a blog-eaves-dropped on you.
