Baladi Nights

does the air force ever do work? i mean, honestly. i've been in balad (an air force base) for two days now, and have yet to see an airman in any uniform other than pt gear. seriously. not a single one. oh! and many of these buggers are only here on 45 day orders. 45 days?! that doesn't even pay for the fuel to fly them here and back!
the base is extremely orderly and organized, paved and graveled with towering concrete barriers erected everywhere. the entertainment complex enjoys an honest-to-god movie theatre playing first-run films, and sporting a concessions stand that rivals any at home. they have two pools, one of which is indoor. it's disgusting, really. taji is a hole compared to balad.
they must have had a very, very bored carpenter on hand, too, or perhaps the seabees, because there are huge gazebos everywhere (with a footprint easily 1000 square feet), with tiered, vented roofs, and built-in barspace. there's also as excessive custom office space--with a freaking double staircase--erected inside the large facility that serves as their pax terminal. i managed to photograph the latter, but forgot to snap the former.
speaking of photos, i have decided that i am in desperate need of a new camera... i had such a neat photo opportunity, shooting through barbed wire the crescent moon and venus framed in trees, but my little elph wasn't quite up to the task. trust me: it would have been beautiful, and poignant.
