Home on the Range
we finally have a few days off, so a few of us went to the range for a recreational day of shooting. in the absence of legitimate posts of late, i thought some of you might enjoy some photos and a short video or two:
this first clip is a transition from a mosberg combat shotgun to a beretta M9 service pistol. i chose the mosberg as my primary weapon because if it gets down to a submarine lieutenant defending the base, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong and chances are things are going to unfold in fairly close quarters. there are a few things here to note. as a child, my parents beat the left-handedness out of me, which leaves me poorly equipped for long rifle shooting as one cannot as readily slap a dominant eye into the other socket... so, i shoot long weapons left-handed for accuracy, and right-handed for reflexive or from-the-hip fire. pistols i shoot right-handed period. i have a slight hiccup in the transition due to concern for range safety (i place the shotgun down, rather than toss it away, and the pistol is safed with no round chambered), which is embarrassing. ah, well. my real primary weapon is a MK48 ADCAP torpedo. what do you expect?
this next clip is me rocking what is likely the sweetest fully-automatic, modified HK MP-5 in theatre: it has a ghetto grip, IR and LED spotlights, ACOG and laser sights, and spits 800 steel-jacketed 9mm rounds downrange per minute from a 30 round magazine. that's under 3 seconds of ammunition. that's hot.

Your parents also beat the left-handedness out of you? I'm glad I'm not alone. Although I can still beat anybody in table tennis left handed. Anybody. Well, like, Adam at least. And you.

What's this "dominant eye" crap? Surely you can see to the end of the front sight tip with your "weak-side" eye...that's all the farther you need to see :-) MP5 - sweet, ain't it? For a 9mm. But I still contend they make them in the 10mm variety (only b/c I shot one). You're a bad dude...if I were in the burm pulling butts, I'd be real scared. (Sorry, I HAD to give you crap...couldn't resist) Uggggh, Beretta...you need a Glock. You want one?
ms. simmons, to clarify: my right eye is amblyopic and astigmatic... so my brain largely disregards its data. i really can't see for crap with it.

as for the glock, i'd love one, but we're not allowed to carry weapons that aren't issued... if we were, i'd be toting the WWII U.S. Army .45 that a local source offered me. we're guarded by contracted security, and have many civilians here, so this post has a ridiculously assorted amount of weaponry--much of russian origin, some polish, a bunch i don't recognize, and most highly modified.
Based on these target practices, will your crossbow skills have improved once you return to the States? Because we're going to need 14 gasoline-doused XVs to be shot at with flaming arrows at Movie On The Lawn 15. 14 15s, of course, because your removal of one year from your life will really only make it the 14th (But XIV is a lot more difficult to carve out of a tree stump than is XV).

have we really held 14 MsOTL? are we ever going to hold MOTL XXX? i've got the graphics ready.
Actually, this summer is the Xth anniversary of Movie On The Lawn. We probably need to plan the graphics, theming, and celebratory print and web products as soon as possible.
I picked MOTL XV as an example because by then, all of us will be in the United States—hopefully retired—and will be able to celebrate together.
I'm officially scared of you now. Always found you slightly intimidating. Now, definitely scared. ;-)
spanks: that's such a bummer. i was always told that you could carry your side arm of choice while on deployment, provided that you carried your own ammo, too. kind of a logistical p.i.t.a., but worth it when your alternative is the dreaded beretta. at least you have contractors...go-o-o-o-o contractors! (shameful plug, i concede)
